Final Note

IIf you're interested to read the entire story, you can purchase the book on the Goody Books Online Store. The book is not available at bookstores.

The book has a total of 39 chapters, with 162 pages. Below are some short extracts from Chapter 28 to 39:

Extracted from Chapter 28:

The drive to the police station was the longest ride in my life. My father was still cursing as he took the steering wheel, and although the car moved on like it was a sports car in a racing competition, I was still able to count the number of Toyota cars on the road and the number of trees that we had passed by. I tried to think of what to say, tried to rehearse the speech in my mind, but all I could make out in my mind were three words to him - Daniel - repeatedly.

Extracted from Chapter 29:

"Well.” I said, and we went out of the toilet together. Male heads turned, and then I mused and knew that they were not turning to steal a second glance at Serene; some of them were looking at me.

There was no difference.

Extracted from Chapter 30:

Chew Ling smiled at my father and thanked him. When he was in the bathroom, Chew Ling crawled towards me and said, “Your father is a good man.”

I just nodded. Chew Ling draped her elbow beside me and muttered, “The UEFA Champions League ended last month. There’s no English Premier League match, or any Spanish La Lagi match tonight. Basically, there’s not a single football match tonight. Maybe softball or netball, but definitely no soccer.”

Extracted from Chapter 31:

Once upon a time, a kitten, Kitty, sees another cat being killed by a human. Kitty starts to be scared, and closes her eyes. She thinks that if she closes her eyes, she will no longer see the brutal killing scene again. A month later, with her eyes still closed, Kitty hears another cat screaming for help, and then silent. She believes that the cat must have been killed by another human.

Extracted from Chapter 32:

The perfect ingredients for a weight-loss diet are as follows: Stress, examinations and deadline. After our June holidays, we went back to school only to be faced with every student’s nemesis: The examinations.

I had studied almost everyday before the examinations, filling my stomach with caffeine every six hours. On the first day of the examination, I had lost three kilograms and my face had popped six pimples out. Once the invigilator gave me the paper, I nodded and knew I was going to gain my weight back.

Extracted from Chapter 33:

I just wanted to be perfect. I want you to say that my photo is nice, whether or not my real person is nice or not. I want you to see me in the best dress, the best expression. I want you to envy me, I want you to remember me this way. I want to be the best, if not I can be…

Photogenic.

Extracted from Chapter 34:

It was only after closer scrutiny that I realized some of the Mcdonald’s branches had colourful tables: Some were blue, some were yellow and some were green. The four of us, Serene, Pat, Chew Ling and me occupied a red table, our food lining up neatly. As usual, Chew Ling had ordered two meals instead of one due to her ineffective digestive system.

Extracted from Chapter 35

“Remember you keep on asking me about my past?”

“Yeah! Are you going to tell me your secret? Please, pretty? Like, you once beaten up a policeman? Or that you were once a bookie?”

I licked my lips with my tongue and nodded. “Okay.” I paused, gave the both of us a breather and then said, “I wasn’t raped.”

Chew Ling listened like someone who was trained to hear tragic stories with a twist here and there. When I started my story, I was expecting Chew Ling to go “What?”. But she just pressed her elbow on the table and leaned forward.

Extracted from Chapter 36:

With that, she rushed towards the bus, and I laughed a little after recalling what Chew Ling had used to call us: Twins.

How ironically true.

Extracted from Chapter 37:

Why had we always thank the cashier who passes us our change in the supermarket, the taxi driver who gives us our change, and yet always forgetting to thank the person who is always next to us, waiting for acknowledgement?

Extracted from Chapter 38:

“Her first sentence to me, I remember, was ‘Hello, I’m Tan Chew Ling. I have asthma and cough a lot. Do you know who I should talk to? I may need medical attention every now and then, but it’s not infectious, so I’m just wondering if we can sort of announce it to the school in case they think I’ve got TB?’ I told her to look for her PE teacher. And I discarded that little girl off my mind.”

Extracted from Chapter 39:

“A few days ago, Sunny and I go into a MRT train. I told her to sit on the chair in front of me, so that we can see each other. But after we sit, many people come in at Raffles Place MRT Station. Then they block my view. I cannot see Sunny anymore. Then at Jurong East MRT Station, all the people go away from the train, and we see each other again. Then Sunny come to me and said ‘See? You’ll just have to wait for me. That’s what true love is all about. Just imagine those passengers as obstacles in our love: They may be blocking us, but I know you’re just in front of me. Nothing on earth can stop our love, okay? If you cannot see me, just wait for me, okay?’."
